The gender gap in school attendance has been eliminated at the primary level and favors girls at the secondary and post-secondary levels. However, in most countries in the region, girls score worse than boys in mathematics and science, a difference that widens throughout the school years leaving girls at a disadvantage in these areas. This leads to a disproportionate lack of women in certain industries and jobs, contributing to the gender wage gap. In addition, a large share of women in the region still lack access to reproductive technology. Maternal mortality remains high in Latin America and the Caribbean, and pregnancy rates among adolescents (15-19 years old) are 20 points above the world average.
