Gender-based violence is extremely common: One in three women between the ages of 15 and 49 in Latin America have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at the hands of a partner. This has a detrimental impact (physical and psychological) on survivors’ health, and affects their economic conditions and opportunities for development. It also increases the likelihood that children will suffer mistreatment, such as physical punishment or negligent/dysfunctional care, as well as the likelihood that minors end up reproducing this behavior when they are adults, perpetuating the cycle of violence.
